Russian now officially has 657 new words!
Several hundred new words were added to the dictionary of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Many of them come from English.
Many of the ‘new’ words have existed in Russian for a long time, but, having been included in the ‘Academos’ dictionary, they finally gained official status. And the main goal of that was to establish their correct spelling.
For example, the word ‘offline’ in Russian should officially be spelled ‘офлайн’, as in the phrase ‘офла́йн-храни́лище’ (offline storage).
Among the new words you can also find:
- Америка́но (Americano), as in ко́фе америка́но (americano coffee)
- Раф (ruff coffee), which is a Russian invention - a coffee based on an espresso shot, cream and (usually vanilla) syrup
- Тикто́кер (TikToker) and its female version – тикто́керша
- Пауэрба́нк (powerbank): prior to its inclusion in the dictionary, you could find it spelled as ‘пауэрбэнк’ or ‘павербэнк’
- Сму́зи (smoothie)
- Копира́йтинг (copywriting)
- Рера́йт (rewrite)
- Ресе́йл (resale)
- са́унд-а́рт (sound art)
There are also some words that the Russian language modified, making them sound more Russian:
- Оке́юшки – the diminutive version of OK (something like ‘alrighty’)
- Завируси́ть(ся) – to go viral
- Форвардну́ть – to forward an email or text message
There are also completely new words with Russian origins, such as:
- Движу́ха – which should be pronounced as ‘dvizhukha’: it arises out of the Russian word for movement, and signifies something akin to the English word for “action” - in a positive or cool way, such as a party or a fun activity.
- Ли́чка – ‘lichka’: this word refers to DMs. Напиши мне в личку – ”DM me.”
