Tyumen in 3 Russian words

Pavel Lisitsyn/Sputnik
This is the first Russian city in Siberia. It was founded in 1586 on the site of Chingi-Tura, the former capital of the Siberian Khanate. Here are three of its main symbols.

1. ТЮМЕНСКИЙ БОЛЬШОЙ ДРАМАТИЧЕСКИЙ ТЕАТР (Tyumen Bolshoi Drama Theater)

Pavel Lisitsyn/Sputnik

This is the largest drama theater in Russia by floor area! Its 36,000 square meters accommodate four auditoriums, each capable of accommodating up to 1,171 spectators. The theater stages approximately 500 performances annually. In 2022, it won the ‘Golden Mask’, Russia's highest theater award, for the musical ‘The Addams Family’.

2. МОСТ ВЛЮБЛЕННЫХ (Bridge of Lovers)

Pavel Lisitsyn/Sputnik

This cable-stayed pedestrian bridge is one of Tyumen's main landmarks and a favorite meeting place for couples. It’s covered with “love” locks, which periodically have to be cut down, due to the increasing load. The bridge is also especially beautiful in the evening, when the bright illumination turns on.

3. СВЯТО-ТРОИЦКИЙ МОНАСТЫРЬ (Holy Trinity Monastery)

Maxim Slutsky/TASS

Founded in the early 17th century, this monastery is one of the oldest in Siberia. During the Soviet era, it was closed and partially destroyed, becoming a museum of atheism and a sanatorium for children with tuberculosis. It was only in 1948 that the monastery was decided to be preserved as an architectural monument and, in 1996, it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.
