Why did two Russian engineers have a Hindu wedding in Moscow?
A spiritual beginning
Andrei and Ksenia are engineers from St. Petersburg. They met at a rock opera about Jesus (‘Jesus Christ Superstar’), so bonded spirituality from the very beginning. And symbolically they said "I do" listening to ancient Vedic chants. Because, on August 21, 2026, they spontaneously chose to have a Hindu wedding, while attending the ‘India Day’ festival in Moscow.
Why Vedic Rituals?
The idea came naturally. The couple had been watching the TV show ‘RadhaKrishna’ and spotted advertising posters with famous Russian rapper ‘ST’ participating in an Indian wedding ceremony at the ‘India Day’ festival. When Ksenia suggested they should join it, Andrey didn't hesitate.
DIY costumes with deep meaning
Their attire was a labor of love — and cosplay. Andrey, a ‘Los Angeles Lakers’ fan, already had a wardrobe full of yellow, Krishna's signature color. Ksenia wore a red ‘sari’ she had bought years earlier in Jaipur. The couple had previously dressed as Radha and Krishna for photoshoots and music videos.
"We always felt sorry that these two lovers didn’t have a chance to marry according to a Vedic tradition," Ksenia says. “But, they finally became wife and husband in our version of the universe!”
The most memorable moments
The highlight of the ceremony was the ‘Saptapadi’ — seven circumambulations around the altar. "I was terrified of tripping," Andrey admits. "But then I started dancing to the 'Hare Krishna' chants."
Ksenia, meanwhile, was focused on playing the flute at the right moments to cue him. But, her most touching memory was simpler: the pandit's soft, caring recitation of the mantras.
A love for India
When asked about India itself, Andrey's loves are sensory — spicy food, Abhyanga massage and vibrant clothing. Ksenia's list is more poetic: art, dance, yoga, masala chai and wisdom.
Andrey dreams of one day visiting Agra and the Taj Mahal. Ksenia, meanwhile, longs for Amritsar, where "there might be traces of antiquity".
A universe of their own
For two engineers who met at a musical about Jesus, their wedding was the perfect fusion of spirituality, art and a shared love for a culture far from home. The holy fire and sacred vedic mantras rituals through Moscow. Russian engineers perceived this moment philosophically.
Ksenia had always been moved by the legend of Shiva and Parvati, who created their first child to maintain peace and cosmic order in the world.
"The Vedic approach to conception is so meticulous," she says. "This ceremony was our ritual for good luck."
