Ivan Aivazovsky (1817–1900) was born in Crimea and spent his youth mesmerized by the Black Sea, which became the soul of his art.

His legendary ‘The Ninth Wave’ (1850) depicts survivors clinging to debris after a storm – a symbol of human resilience.
