Ingushetia in 3 Russian words

Legion Media
The Republic of Ingushetia is one of the smallest constituent entities of the Russian Federation. However, the region is renowned for its ancient culture and rich architectural traditions. Here are three of its main symbols.

1. ХРАМ ТХАБА-ЕРДЫ (Thaba-Yerdy Temple)

Legion Media

This is quite possibly the oldest Christian church in Russia. Some scholars believe it was built in as early as the 8th century. Thaba-Yerdy is located in the highlands in the picturesque Assa River Valley. Its name, according to various versions, translates as ‘Our Faith’, ‘Temple of Faith’ or ‘Two Thousand Saints’.

2. ИНГУШСКИЕ БАШНИ (Ingush Towers)

Legion Media

The republic is dotted with hundreds of stone towers built between the 13th and 17th centuries. There are residential, military, as well as transitional semi-military towers. Some towers have flat roofs, while others have pyramidal ones. One of the most famous medieval defensive and watchtower complexes in Ingush is the ‘Vovnushki’ complex.

3. МАВЗОЛЕЙ БРОГА-КАШ (Borga-Kash Mausoleum)

Legion Media

Built in the 15th century, the Borga-Kash Mausoleum (‘Borgan's Tomb’) is one of the oldest surviving Muslim monuments in the North Caucasus. It’s believed to contain the remains of a high-ranking warrior of the Turkic-speaking Borghan tribe, along with his family. However, it may also contain a nobleman named Borga or Borgan.
