This martial art was invented in the Soviet Union and is recognized worldwide.
‘Sambo’ is an acronym formed from the initial syllables of the Russian phrase: “Samozashchita bez oruzhiya.” It means: “Self-defense without weapons.” This combat sport was developed in the USSR back in the 1930s and is based on judo, jiu-jitsu and the traditional wrestling styles of the Soviet peoples. Today, sambo is recognized in many countries around the world. Russian is considered the official language of sambo.
