As a true polymath, Mikhail Lomonosov (1711-1765) made fundamental contributions to science, from formulating the law of mass conservation to pioneering research in atmospheric electricity. He’s also the author of the Moscow university project that could make education accessible to students from different social classes. Born a fisherman's son in the Russian North, his thirst for knowledge literally led him to walk all the way to Moscow to enroll in school.
