“You may not be a poet, but you must be a citizen…” This famous line by Nikolay Nekrasov (1821-1878) encapsulates his belief in art's social duty. He was known for his epic poems about the tragedy of the peasantry in Old Russia, the fortitude of Russian women and the fate of the Russian people. His most famous poems are called ‘Who lives happily in Russia?’ and ‘Russian women’.
