Overlooked Russian greats: Eisenstein
Learn the letter ‘Э’ and discover the father of modern cinema.
Э – Эйзенштейн Сергей
Sergei Eisenstein’s (1898-1948) theory of montage – that juxtaposing images creates new meaning – changed movie making forever. The iconic Odessa Steps sequence from ‘Battleship Potemkin’ (1925), with its rolling baby carriage, remains one of the most imitated scenes in cinema history. He also created the epic ‘Alexander Nevsky’ (1938) and the ambitious ‘Ivan the Terrible’ (1944).
