The eagle owl is the largest owl in Russia and is found throughout the country. Its wingspan can reach up to two meters and, when fully grown, can weigh up to 4 kg. The ‘filin’ can hear a mouse squeaking beneath a layer of snow and catch prey in complete darkness. On its head, the eagle owl has tufts of feathers resembling ears – they are used for camouflage and expressing emotions.
