Let's learn some clothing vocabulary in Russian! (VIDEO)
The most Russian American reveals not only essential words for items like 'hat' or 'fur coat', but also which verbs to use...!
In English you can just say “I need to get dressed" and keep it vague. Russian has that too: одеться means “to get dressed.” But if you use the verb надеть - “to put on” - you usually need to say what exactly you’re putting on.
So here are some common options. Some of them may sound familiar:
- Шапка (hat) – the most essential one!
- Шарф (scarf) saves your neck from wind, believe me, you’ll need it in Russia.
- Куртка (jacket) or пуховик (down jacket) if it’s a warm winter jacket with down inside… пух means fluff by the way.
- Пальто (coat)
- Шуба (fur coat) – sometimes you just need it to survive
- Свитер (sweater)
- Футболка (T-shirt) – yeah, literally a shirt for football
- Штаны / брюки (trousers)
- Шорты (shorts)
- Ботинки (boots),
- Кроссовки (sneakers)
- You can also use some English words you already know - Russians use them too:
- Худи (hoodie) or even Зипка (Zip hoodie)
- Лонгслив (longsleeve) a very cringe term to hear in Russian
- And of course our favorite one - Джинсы (jeans)
