Elista in 3 Russian words
1. ЗОЛОТАЯ ОБИТЕЛЬ БУДДЫ ШАКЬЯМУНИ (The Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni)
This is the largest Buddhist temple in Europe! It stands roughly as tall as a 20-storey building and houses a nine-meter-tall Buddha statue, covered in gold and adorned with precious stones. The 14th Dalai Lama gave his blessing for its construction during his visit to Kalmykia in 2004.
2. ШАХМАТЫ (Chess)
Elista is unofficially considered the chess capital of Russia. It has hosted world championship matches, as well as the World Chess Olympiad; the unique ‘City-Chess’ District – featuring a Chess Palace, a museum and a collection of themed chess pieces – was built specifically for the latter event. Learning this wonderful game is mandatory in local schools.
3. ЗОЛОТЫЕ ВОРОТА (The Golden Gate)
This golden-hued arch with red columns symbolizes a sacred threshold; upon crossing it, a person is spiritually purified and embarks on the path of virtue. The Golden Gate features 28 paintings that tell the story of the Kalmyk people. If the wind causes the bells beneath the roof to chime, feel free to make a wish – it’s sure to come true!
