The new Central Museum of the Russian Cossacks is a branch of the State Historical Museum. It is located in an old 18th-century mansion on Bolshoi Levshinsky Lane and its exhibition covers the entire history of the Cossacks in Russia – from the 16th century to the present day.

There are more than 800 items in 16 halls: uniforms, weapons, banners, coins, paintings, maps, sculptures, personal Cossack awards and much more.

Among the main exhibits is a sabre given to Colonel of the Don Army Mikhail Sebryakov by Empress Catherine II, a bust of Matvey Ivanovich Platov, the Ataman of the Don Army, by British sculptor Peter Turnerelli, as well as a rare robe worn by the Buryat regiments of the Transbaikal Cossack Army.

In addition, the museum's collection includes a model of a Cossack hut from the Terek region. It was donated to the historical museum in 1890 by Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich, the future Emperor Nicholas II.
