LESSON 5: TYPES OF CONJUGATION

All Russian verbs are divided into two groups by the patterns of conjugation: first conjugation and second conjugation. In Unit 4, we already learned the verbs of the first conjugation and their present tense forms.

In the table below, you can compare the present tense endings of verbs of the two conjugations and see the difference:

First conjugation

Second conjugation

работать

говорить

я

работаю

говорю

ты

работаешь

говоришь

он, она

работает

говорит

мы

работаем

говорим

вы

работаете

говорите

они

работают

говорят

If we look at the verbs we learned in Unit 4 and Unit 5, they are distributed by conjugation as follows:

First-conjugation verbs include verbs ending in -ать or -ять: работать, отдыхать, делать, играть, читать,  знать, понимать, гулять

Second-conjugation verbs include: говорить, учить, смотреть

The distribution of verbs into conjugations is not so clear-cut and has many exceptions.  Additionally, there are other variations of verbs ending in ‘-ыть’, ‘-уть’, ‘-чь’ etc. that you will learn later. Thus, we will not go into this in detail at this stage.
