In Lesson 4, we learned how to say “I have + smth/smb”: Ex.: У меня есть сестра.

In this lesson, we will extend our knowledge about the Genitive case’s usage. To say “I don’t have”, we use the Genitive case twice:

У + Gen Pronoun/Gen Noun + нет + Gen Noun

1. A: У меня есть брат.
B: А у меня нет брата.

A: I have a brother.
B: And I don’t have a brother.

2. У сестры есть машина.
У сестры нет машины.

My sister has a car.
My sister doesn’t have a car.

3. У Наташи нет сестры.

Natasha doesn’t have a sister.

NOTE!

1. Some masculine words with -a ending in Genitive case change like feminine words, if they imply a male person:

папа → папы, дедушка → дедушки, дядя → дяди, мужчина →  мужчины. This includes men’s names:

Саша→ Саши, Дима→ Димы, Никита→ Никиты

2. If the word has к, г, х, ж, ш or и in the end, we add an -’и’ to the ending:

бабушка → бабушки

Мария → Марии
