LESSON 11: ACCUSATIVE CASE OF ANIMATE NOUNS

The Accusative case of the noun defines the direct object of the action. For example:

1. Я слушаю джаз.
I’m listening to jazz.

2. Я читаю книгу.
I’m reading a book.

3. Я люблю красное вино.
I like red wine.

We already learnt the basic rule for the Accusative case of the nouns (Unit 10). So now, let’s review and broaden it. When you use a singular masculine noun in the Accusative case, it is crucial to note if it is animate (person or animal) or inanimate (object or abstract notion). Inanimate nouns don’t change, while animate nouns add -а/-я at the end. Compare:

1. Я жду автобус. (inanimate)
I’m waiting for a bus.

2. Я жду брата. (animate)
I’m waiting for my brother.

Here is the table:

Accusative case

masculine
inanimate

masculine
animate

feminine

neuter

автобус → автобус

чай → чай

отель → отель

брат → брата

Алексей → Алексея

учитель  → учителя

паста → пасту

сестра → сестру

мясо → мясо

море → море

Thus, masculine animate nouns in singular share the same endings as Accusative and Genitive. Compare:

Accusative

Genitive

Я встретил в баре друга.
I met a friend in the bar.

Ты знаешь Сергея?
Do you know Sergei?

У друга есть машина.
My friend has a car.

У Сергея есть дети.
Sergei has children.
