А: Здесь можно фотографировать?
В: Извините, но здесь фотографировать нельзя.

A: Can I take photos here? (Is it allowed to take photos here?)
B: I'm sorry, but taking pictures is not allowed here.

  • “Можно + infinitive” indicates the permission to do something.

1. Здесь можно плавать?
Can I swim here?

2. Здесь можно курить.
Smoking is allowed here.

  • “Нельзя + infinitive” indicates that some action is forbidden.

1. Здесь нельзя плавать.
Swimming is forbidden here.

2. В ресторане нельзя курить.
Smoking is not allowed in the restaurant.

  • To specify the person concerned in these constructions, use the dative case.

1. Можно мне позвонить?
May I make a call?

2. Тебе можно пить алкоголь?
Are you allowed to drink alcohol?

3. Вам нельзя бегать.
You are not allowed to run.
