Task 1: Listen to the audio & read the dialog

Maria and John get acquainted with their neighbor, Fedor Mikhailovich, and start a conversation with him.

Maria: Федор Михайлович, вы едете во Владивосток?
Fyodor Mikhailovich, are you going to Vladivostok?

Fedor M: Нет, моя станция раньше, она называется Ледяная. Там недалеко космодром Восточный.
No, my station is earlier, it's called Ledyanaya. The Vostochny Cosmodrome is not far from there.

Maria: Ничего себе! Вы там живёте?
Wow! Do you live there?

Fedor M: Живу я в Твери. Это 200 километров от Москвы. А по профессии я инженер-строитель и еду работать.
I live in Tver. It’s 200 kilometers from Moscow. And by profession I’m a civil engineer and I travel to work.

John: Работать строителем в Сибири, наверное, очень трудно?
Working as a builder in Siberia surely must be very difficult?

Fedor M: А мне нравится. Тайга, ракеты, а я строю дома для настоящих людей.
Well, I like it. The taiga, rockets… and I build houses for real people.

John: Но здесь нет никого и ничего, и почти всё время холодно. Вы не устаёте?
But, there is no one and nothing here and it is cold almost all the time. Don't you get tired?

Fedor M: Раньше я работал в офисе. Вот это была тяжёлая работа! Каждый день я должен был проверить почту, прочитать письма, ответить на сообщения в чате, подтвердить встречу, отменить встречу… Моя жизнь не имела смысла.
I used to work in an office. Now that was a tough job! Every day, I had to check my email, read my letters, reply to chat messages, confirm meetings, cancel meetings. My life had no meaning.

Maria: Я с вами согласна. Я тоже не люблю писать отчёты, заполнять документы, даже отвечать на письма.
I agree with you. I also don't like writing reports, filling out documents or even answering letters.

John: Извините, а сколько вам лет? Вы такой энергичный!
Excuse me, how old are you? You’re so energetic!

Fedor M: Мне только 60, и я не чувствую, что я старый.
I'm only 60 and I don't feel like I’m old.

John: А вы давно работаете на космодроме?
How long have you been working at the cosmodrome?

Fedor M: Уже 10 лет. Полгода я живу в Твери, а полгода там.
For 10 years already. I live in Tver for half a year and there for half a year.

Maria: Вы живёте там один? А ваша семья?
Do you live there alone? And what about your family?

Fedor M: Мои дети уже взрослые, у них свои семьи. А жена скоро приедет.
My children are already grown up, they have their own families. And my wife will arrive soon.

John: А чем она занимается на космодроме?
And what does she do at the cosmodrome?

Fedor M: Она работает медсестрой в больнице. Ей тоже нравится. Её пациенты – космонавты и другие интересные люди.
She works as a nurse in a hospital. She also likes it. Her patients are cosmonauts and other interesting people.
