The words in bold have the Dative case form. The Dative case indicates the indirect object of an action, i.e. the person for whom an action is performed (the recipient or beneficiary).
The Dative case is used to answer questions ‘кому’ (‘whom’) and ‘чему’ (‘what’). For example:
А: Кому ты звонишь?
В: Я звоню маме.
Whom are you calling?
I’m calling mom.
Below are the verbs that are frequently used with the Dative case:
- говорить / сказать talk, speak, say
- покупать / купить purchase, buy
- звонить / позвонить call
- перезванивать / перезвонить call back
- отвечать / ответить reply, respond, answer
- отправлять / отправить send
- посылать / послать send
- помогать / помочь assist, help
- объяснять / объяснить explain
- показывать / показать show
- нравиться / понравиться like

1) The table presents two variants of endings in each case. The first ones (-у, -е, -ам) are used more frequently. At this stage, we will only focus on them. So, in the following exercises and tasks, we will only practice these three endings.
