In Russian, the expression "to be married" depends on who you are talking about: a man, a woman or a couple. Unlike in English, in Russian, there are three different ways of saying it.

  • a woman → она замужем
  • a man →  он женат
  • a couple  →  они женаты

For example:

1. Анна замужем.
Anna is married.

2. Олег женат.
Oleg is married.

3. Анна и Олег женаты.
Anna and Oleg are married (to each other).

‘Женаты’ is also used in a polite question when you ask a man about his marital status:

Андрей, вы женаты?
Andrey, are you married?

If you ask a woman, you say:

Таня, вы замужем?
Tanya, are you married?
