The location prepositions ‘у’, ‘около’, ‘справа от’, ‘слева от’, ‘недалеко от’ require the Genitive case after them.

1. У – at, by

Used to indicate that something is located very close to another object. 

1. Кошка сидит у окна. 
The cat is sitting by the window.

2. Мы встретились у театра. 
We met by the theater.

2. Около – near, around

Used to indicate that something is located near another object or close to it.  

1. Кресло стоит около дивана. 
The armchair is near the sofa.

2. Мы живём около парка. 
We live near the park.

3. Справа от – to the right of

Used to indicate that something is located to the right of another object. 

1. Тумбочка стоит справа от кровати. 
The nightstand is to the right of the bed.

2. Новое кафе находится справа от музея. 
The new cafe is to the right of the museum.

4. Слева от – to the left of

Used to indicate that something is located to the left of another object.

1. Зеркало висит слева от двери.
The mirror is hanging to the left of the door.

2. Слева от дома есть маленький сад.
To the left of the house is a small garden.

5. Недалеко от – not far from

Used to indicate that something is located not far from another object.

1. Ресторан находится недалеко от метро. 
The restaurant is not far from the subway station.

2. Недалеко от моего дома есть парк.
There is a park not far from my home.
