Task 1: Listen to the audio & read the dialog
Petya sees Yuki standing by the school exit looking confused as she glances at her phone and around her.
Yuki, do you need help?
I want to buy a birthday present for my Russian grandmother. But, I don’t know what to get or where to buy it.
Let’s go to a big shopping mall. You’ll be able to choose something there.
Do you really have time?
Of course! I have plenty of time!
At the mall, by the directory board…
Such a big shopping mall! Just like we have in Tokyo.
Well… there’s a supermarket on the basement floor. But, we don’t need to go there. There’s a big cosmetics store on the first floor. You can buy, for example, face cream or perfume there. And there are discounts right now.
That’s great! But, I don’t know what she likes.
And there’s a shoe store next door! Look at these beautiful slippers!
Slippers? That’s not for my grandmother! She wears fancy shoes even at home.
Wow! Then, let’s go to the second floor. There’s a clothing store there. Maybe we can look there?
In the clothing store…
Maybe you could give her this blue scarf?
It’s only for old ladies!
I see… Maybe some warm socks?
Petya, what socks? She wants to feel young and beautiful!
Yeah, that’s difficult… What about a book? A book is the best gift! There’s a big bookstore on the third floor.
Let’s go!
In the bookstore…
I’ve never been to a Russian bookstore before! But, I don’t know what she might like.
Maybe some classic literature?
I think she’s already read everything!
My grandmother is like that, too. Though, honestly, you can give my grandma slippers.
Oh, there are so many beautiful notebooks here!
Does your grandmother do any writing?
I think she keeps a diary.
Look! What a wonderful thick leather notebook!
Let’s buy it! And I have a beautiful Japanese pen at home.
Then shall we go and pay? The checkout counter is over there.
Petya, you saved me!
