Most POPULAR children's names in Moscow in 2025
Despite the emergence of new fashionable names, the majority of Moscow parents chose traditional ones.
The top three most popular names for girls in Moscow have remained virtually unchanged from the last year, according to data from the city's Civil Registry Office (ZAGS). They are ‘Anna’, ‘Sofia’ and ‘Maria’.
The names ‘Anna’ and ‘Maria’ have consistently ranked among the top 10 most popular names for nearly half a century. The name ‘Sofia’ (or ‘Sofya’), meanwhile, first appeared in the ratings in 2004 and has firmly held a leading position since 2010.
Among names for boys, ‘Mikhail’, ‘Alexander’ and ‘Lev’ have become popular. Incidentally, the name ‘Lev’ only entered the top three last year, displacing the name ‘Maxim’.
Across Russia as a whole, according to the ‘ZAGS’ registry portal, the most popular female names are ‘Sofia’, ‘Eva’ and ‘Anna’, while for males, they are ‘Mikhail’, ‘Alexander’ and ‘Artyom’.
