Ethnic groups of Russia: Mansi
More than 190 ethnic groups live in the Russian Federation. Today, we're highlighting the Mansi!
This Finno-Ugric ethnic group numbers only around 12,000. They predominantly live in Tyumen Oblast in Western Siberia. The word ‘Mansi’ itself means ‘person’.
The Mansi are mostly hunters, fishermen and reindeer herders. Lingonberry and pine nut gathering are also common. They use braided pine roots to make dishes, boxes, crates and baskets.
For the Mansi, the bear is a highly revered animal, an ancestor of the clan, the spiritual protector of the family, the master of the taiga and a symbol of nature's wisdom. They regularly hold festivals in its honor.
Mansi cuisine includes a variety of fish and reindeer dishes, with pine nuts and wild berries. One of the most popular delicacies is squirrel stomach.
