Ethnic groups of Russia: Balkars

More than 190 ethnic groups live in the Russian Federation. Today, we're highlighting the Balkars!

This indigenous Turkic-speaking people of the North Caucasus numbers about 135,000, most of whom live in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic. Together with their neighboring Karachays, the Balkars effectively form a single people and call themselves ‘Taulula’, which translates from their common language as ‘mountain dwellers’.

The Balkars are one of the highest-altitude peoples in Russia! Their territory is home to six of the country's highest mountain peaks, including the famous Mount Elbrus. It's no surprise that it's depicted on the flag of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic.

The Balkars are traditionally sheep herders and from the sheep's wool they weave ‘kiyzy’ — floor and wall felt rugs with vibrant and bright patterns. In ancient times, these rugs served not only as decoration, but also as bedding; they were given as dowries and used in various ceremonies and rituals.

The Balkars love ‘khychina’, a round pancake filled with meat, cheese, herbs and potatoes. They also prepare ‘gedlibzhe’ – a dish made with chicken pieces stewed in a sour cream sauce with plenty of onions. The national dessert, meanwhile, is sweet, layered Kabardian bread with sugar.
