This region is famous for its ancient architecture, majestic monasteries and folk crafts, as well as butter production. Here are three of its main symbols.

1. КИРИЛЛО-БЕЛОЗЕРСКИЙ МОНАСТЫРЬ (Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery)

The history of the monastery began at the end of the 14th century with a small dugout on the shore of Lake Siverskoye. It soon became one of the largest and richest in Russia. In Soviet times, a museum-reserve was opened there and, today, it coexists with the monastery. The main relic of the monastery is the remains of its founder, St. Kirill of Belozersk.

2. ВОЛОГОДСКОЕ КРУЖЕВО (Vologda lace)

Local lace-making has been known since the 17th century. It is famous for the richness and variety of patterns and the clear and expressive lines of the ornament that do not merge with the secondary background. Vologda lace is also woven with special wooden sticks – bobbins.

3. ДЕД МОРОЗ (Father Frost)

The official “birthplace” of the ‘Russian Santa Claus’ is considered to be the city of Veliky Ustyug in Vologda Region. His residence is located very close to it – a fairy-tale place where you can experience many adventures, ride reindeer, horses and sleds pulled by Husky dogs and, of course, meet Ded Moroz himself.
