There are three MAIN dialects in the Russian language

In most major cities, people mainly speak the literary language, but different regions have their own peculiarities.
Despite the fact that Russia is so large, linguists have distinguished only three groups of dialects: northern, southern and central Russian. The southern dialect is distinguished by the “fricative g”, the northern dialect by a clear-sounding ‘o’ and ‘ts’ instead of ‘ch’, while the speakers of the central dialect often pronounce an unstressed ‘o’ as ‘a’.
Despite this, most people in the country understand still each other, with the exception of rare local words and expressions.
