Vowels ‘E’ and ‘A’ follow closely behind.

The letter ‘O’ appears most frequently in modern Russian words. In spoken language, an unstressed ‘O’ sounds like a vague ‘A’ (in phonetics, this sound is denoted as [ɐ]).

However, in the northern Russian dialect, people ‘okayut’ – that is, they pronounce even unstressed ‘O’ as [o], which sounds unnatural to the modern Russian ear.
