Overlooked Russian greats: Bulgakov

Learn the letter ‘Б’ and discover one of the most unusual Russian writers.
Б – Булгаков
Mikhail Bulgakov (1891–1940) is best known as the author of ‘The Master and Margarita’ and ‘Heart of a Dog’, but his original profession was medicine.
His ‘A Young Doctor's Notebook’ reveals some amusing episodes from his practice. After serving as a doctor in the Caucasus during the Civil War, Bulgakov abandoned medicine for writing. He later admitted that the creative impulse had simmered in him for years, but only after surviving those upheavals could he fully devote himself to literature.
