As a poet of the people from a rural province, Sergei Yesenin (1895-1925) celebrated the beauty of the Russian countryside. His lyrical verses – about a snow-covered birch tree, a waiting mother and his complex relationship with Moscow after moving there – have become famous Russian songs. And, despite his notorious reputation as a troublemaker, he left a vast legacy of over 500 poems.
