For centuries, this region served as a reliable shield for the northwestern borders of Russia. Many powerful fortresses were located there, but only a few have survived to this day. Here are three of its main symbols.

1. МОДЕСТ МУСОРГСКИЙ (Modest Mussorgsky)

This great Russian composer was born in the village of Karevo, Pskov Governate, on March 21, 1839. He spent the first 10 years of his life there. Unfortunately, the Mussorgsky Estate has not survived and the only museum dedicated to the composer in the world is located in his mother's estate in the neighboring village of Naumovo.

2. ПСКОВСКИЙ КРОМ (Pskov Krom)

The Pskov Krom (Kremlin) is considered the historical core of the city. The powerful fortress was built in the early 12th century on a high cape at the confluence of the Pskova and Velikaya rivers. For many centuries, the krom served as a reliable northwestern outpost of Old Russia, successfully repelling the onslaught of foreign invaders.

3. МУЗЕЙ-ЗАПОВЕДНИК МИХАЙЛОВСКОЕ (Mikhailovskoye Museum-Reserve)

The museum-reserve of great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin includes dozens of objects related to the life and work of the great Russian poet. Such as the ‘Mikhailovskoye’ family estate or his grave in the Svyatogorsk Holy Assumption Monastery. In addition, the reserve contains various archaeological sites, including ancient settlements and sites.
