Although the calendar winter has already arrived, snow and frost have, so far, bypassed the Russian capital and the breath of fall can still be felt in the air. Let's familiarize ourselves with the vocabulary associated with the four seasons.

ЗИМА – WINTER 

  • холод – cold
  • мороз – frost
  • стужа – intense cold, bitter frost
  • снег/снегопад – snow / snowfall
  • метель – snowstorm, blizzard
  • гололедица – black ice
  • иней – hoarfrost, rime

ВЕСНА – SPRING

  • тепло – warm, warmth
  • капель – drop (of melting snow/ice)
  • таяние – thaw, melting
  • ледоход – ice drift, breaking up of river ice
  • гроза – thunderstorm
  • цветение – blossoming, flowering
  • проталина – thawed patch (of ground)

ЛЕТО – SUMMER

  • жара – heat
  • зной – scorching heat, swelter
  • солнцепёк – blazing sun, intense sun heat
  • долгий день – long day
  • ливень – heavy rain, downpour
  • тёплые ночи – warm nights
  • летнее солнцестояние – summer solstice

ОСЕНЬ – FALL/AUTUMN

  • прохлада – cool, chill
  • ветер – wind
  • дождь – rain
  • туман – fog, mist
  • листопад – leaf fall, falling leaves
  • пасмурные дни – overcast, gloomy days
