Ivangorod in 3 Russian words

Legion Media
This small town is located on the border with Narva, Estonia. Only a river a few dozen meters wide separates it from the European Union. Here are three of its main symbols.

1. ИВАНГОРОДСКАЯ КРЕПОСТЬ (Ivangorod Fortress)

Legion Media

This fortress was built in 1492 as the western outpost of the Russian state. It was deliberately erected directly opposite the castle of the Teutonic Order, which was located on the other side of the river. Both majestic structures have survived numerous wars and occupations, having been partially destroyed and rebuilt. They continue to stand side by side to this day.

2. ГРАНИЦА (Border)

Legion Media

For many centuries, Ivangorod was a border town of the Russian state. Following the Great Northern War of 1700-1721, most of the Baltic region was annexed by Russia and it lost its border status. Today, the border between Russia and Estonia passes through there. The countries are connected by two bridges over the Narva River.

3. РАЙОН «ПАРУСИНКА» (Parusinka District)

This picturesque district in the southern part of Ivangorod was built specifically for workers in the cloth and flax mills in the 19th century. It’s strongly reminiscent of the English factory settlements of that era and stands in stark contrast to the city's Soviet development.
