Samara in 3 Russian words
The city has one of the longest river embankments in Russia and the tallest railway station building in Europe. Here are three more of its symbols.
1. ЛАДЬЯ (The Ladya)
Shipping on the Volga River has always played an important role in the life of Samara. It's no surprise that one of its main symbols is the ancient Russian ship, the ‘Ladya’. In 1986, to commemorate the city's 400th anniversary, a 20-meter-tall monument to the ‘Ladya’ was erected on the embankment, becoming a favorite meeting place for residents and visitors alike.
2. РАКЕТА-НОСИТЕЛЬ «СОЮЗ» (‘Soyuz’ Launch Vehicle)
The ‘Soyuz’ launch vehicle was designed to launch spacecraft and satellites into Earth’s orbit. It was developed in the 1950s in Kuibyshev, as Samara was then known. In 2001, the rocket was erected in the city as a monument. The ‘Space Samara’ museum is located nearby.
3. ПИВО (Beer)
Samara is home to one of the oldest breweries in Russia, founded in 1881 by Austrian Alfred Wacano-Ritter von Wello. Before the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, they brewed ‘Venskoye’ (‘Viennese’) beer and, during the Soviet era, they began producing ‘Zhigulevskoye’ – one of the most famous beer brands in the USSR.
