FAQ: The ‘Gateway to Russia’ Russian language course

Natalya Nosova
Have you already started learning Russian with us? Or are you only planning and wondering if the course is for you? Let’s figure this all out!

1. Who can take this course?

Our Russian language course is designed for beginners, so you can learn Russian from scratch with it! You’ll study the alphabet and phonetics and then move to structure and grammar. And, after completing the course, you will have confidently and successfully reached level A1 (Elementary).

2. Is course free?

Yes, the course is completely free. Not a single payment is required at any stage.

3. How long does the course last?

Our course is intended for self-study, so the duration only depends on your own pace and schedule. You can learn grammar and take our lessons at any time that is comfortable for you and you are not limited by time in any way.

4. How is progress tracked?

To track the progress, you will need to register and create your free personal account. You’ll then be able to track only the overall course progress, seeing the percentage of what you’ve already completed.

Currently, every single lesson and unit progress tracking is not available, but we are working on it to make your study even more convenient!

5. Can I check which unit or lesson I stopped at last time?

At the moment, you won’t be able to keep on learning automatically from the lesson or task you’ve stopped at. But, we are working on it, so this feature will be available soon. In the meantime, you can put a bookmark in your browser or add the lesson you’ve stopped at in your ‘favorites’. Or you can resume your study from any earlier lesson, because, as we say in Russian, “repetition is the mother of learning”!

6. How can I get a certificate?

When you finish all the lessons and units, you’ll be able to download a digital certificate issued by 'Gateway to Russia' in your personal account.

7. Is it an official certificate?

The ‘Gateway to Russia’ language certificate is not an official educational certificate confirming language proficiency. It only confirms that you’ve completed the A1-level course on our website.

8. Will mistakes and incorrectly completed tasks and tests affect the issue of the certificate?

Don’t worry, incorrect answers won’t affect your certificate. At any point, you can return to lessons with grammar rules you want to repeat and retake any complicated tasks you didn’t get right the first time. The certificate will be issued upon course completion, regardless of how many mistakes you made along the way!

9. How can I type in Russian?

If you don’t have a Russian keyboard, don’t worry, we’ve put together some handy lifehacks on how to type in Russian on your keyboard. Or you can always use your smartphone by simply adding a Russian keyboard in the settings.

10. Is the course only available in English?

Right now, you can only take the Russian course via our English-language website. However, we are already working on versions of the course in other languages. Stay tuned with us and we’ll duly let you know about all new releases.

11. Is only A1 (Elementary) level available now?

Yes. Right now, you can only take a course for beginners. But, more advanced levels are also in our plans (We’re already working on the A2 level!).
