Why is the letter 'Ё' so important?

In Russian language, we have two very similar letters - 'Е' and 'Ё'. The second is actually the youngest letter in the alphabet!

You must use 'Ё' in text books or official documents. In every day life, Russians almost never use the umlaut, although always know what letter they mean.

But, poor foreigners are often confused and can't understand when it's 'Е' and 'Ё'!

How to solve the this problem? Practice the language and read more Russian books, in order to get a feel for 'Ё'!
