Pelagiya Tikhonova/Sputnik
This region is the center of the country's textile industry. It’s also famous for its folk arts and crafts and its beautiful natural landscape, which has inspired the best artists. Here are three of its main symbols.

1. НЕВЕСТЫ (Brides)

Pavel Lisitsyn/Sputnik

Ivanovo, the capital and administrative center of Ivanovo Region, is dubbed the "city of brides". This is because, since 1928, it has been the country's "textile capital" and its factories have always employed many women. After World War II, their share became overwhelming. A woman with a spinning wheel is even depicted on the city's coat of arms.

2. ПАЛЕХСКАЯ МИНИАТЮРА (Palekh Miniatures)

Vladimir Smirnov/TASS

The village of Palekh has long been famous for its icon painters. After the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, local artists began painting boxes, caskets and trays, using subjects from fairy tales, epics, classical literature, as well as everyday life. Today, Palekh miniatures are widely known not only in Russia, but also abroad.

3. ИСААК ЛЕВИТАН (Isaac Levitan)

Famous artist Isaac Levitan discovered the town of Plyos, near Ivanovo, quite by chance while traveling with friends in 1888. The local picturesque views inspired him so much that he settled there permanently. He also created his best works in Plyos. Today, the Levitan House Museum is located in the town.
