The bear is the main symbol of Yaroslavl and Yaroslavl Region. A bear, armed with an axe, is the main feature on their coats of arms. According to legend, Prince Yaroslav the Wise, the city's founder, slew a bear that attacked him with an axe. He ordered a church to be built on this site and Yaroslavl began to grow around it. Today, images of the "master of the taiga" can be found literally everywhere.
