Tver Region in 3 Russian words

Aleksey Malgavko/Sputnik
This is the largest region in Central Russia by area, covering a larger territory than Austria or the Czech Republic. Here are three of its main symbols.

1. ОЗЕРО СЕЛИГЕР (Lake Seliger)

Ilya Pitalev/Sputnik

This is one of the most picturesque lakes in Russia, formed where a glacier melted. It stretches for hundreds of kilometers and is essentially a chain of small bodies of water connected by narrow straits. The lake is home to more than 160 islands featuring tourist camps, churches and monasteries.

2. КАЛЯЗИНСКАЯ КОЛОКОЛЬНЯ (Kalyazin bell tower)

Maksim Bogodvid/Sputnik

This was once an ordinary bell tower attached to the Kalyazin Cathedral. In the late 1930s, Soviet authorities decided to create the Uglich Reservoir there. They flooded part of the city and dismantled the cathedral in the process. The bell tower, however, was left standing to serve as a lighthouse. In 2025, it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.

3. АФАНАСИЙ НИКИТИН (Afanasy Nikitin)

D. Smirnov/Sputnik

This 15th-century merchant from Tver was one of the first Europeans to reach India. In his famous work, ‘A Journey Beyond the Three Seas’, he described in detail the political structure, customs and traditions of this distant land.
