Russian Language Exported: BORZOI
An aristocrat among dogs, whose speed gave the world a word derived from the Russian for ‘fast’.
The Russian wolfhound (English, German 'borzoi', French 'barzoï') is a breed of hunting dog developed in Russia. Its name comes from the adjective ‘borzyi’, meaning ‘fast’ or ‘swift’. At the end of the 19th century, the breed reached Europe and the United States, where it kept its Russian name – unlike the English greyhound or the Afghan hound. Today, ‘borzoi’ is the official breed name in international canine classification.
