Bryansk in 3 Russian words
This city southwest of Moscow boasts a park with a unique collection of wooden sculptures and one of the oldest monasteries in Russia. Here are three more symbols of Bryansk.
1. АЛЕКСАНДР ПЕРЕСВЕТ (Alexander Peresvet)
This Russian warrior monk, originally from Bryansk, fought in the Battle of Kulikovo against the Mongols on September 8, 1380, a victory that hastened the end of the Mongol yoke in Rus. The battle opened with a duel between the two greatest warriors, Peresvet and Chelubey. Both died in the battle. A monument to the hero has been erected in Bryansk, and a street and ice palace are named in his honor.
2. КУРГАН БЕССМЕРТИЯ (Mound of Immortality)
A grand memorial complex to those who fell fighting the Nazis was erected in Bryansk in 1976. A 12-meter artificial earth embankment houses an 18-meter three-dimensional five-pointed star, encircled by a mosaic panel depicting Soviet soldiers.
3. БРЯНСКИЙ ДРАМАТИЧЕСКИЙ ТЕАТР (Bryansk Drama Theater)
The Bryansk A.K. Tolstoy Regional Drama Theateris the oldest in the Bryansk Region. It opened in 1926. During World War II, the Germans blew up the theater building, destroying the sets, costume department, furniture, and musical instruments. Fortunately, it was restored in 1949.
