1. ЯРОСЛАВ МУДРЫЙ (Yaroslav the Wise)
One of the most outstanding rulers in Russian history, he was renowned for his successful foreign policy, the drafting of the state's first code of laws, and his large-scale construction projects. In 1010, Prince Yaroslav the Wise founded Yaroslavl. A monument to the prince stands in the city center, and he is depicted on the 1000 ruble banknote.
2. МЕДВЕДЬ (Bear)
This is the main symbol of Yaroslavl and Yaroslavl Region. The animal is depicted on their coats of arms holding an axe in its paw! Legend has it that the city's founder, Prince Yaroslav the Wise, used such an axe to kill an attacking bear. This incident occurred on the site where Yaroslavl grew up.
3. ЦЕРКОВЬ ИЛЬИ ПРОРОКА (Church of Elijah the Prophet)
This outstanding monument of ancient Russian architecture was built in the mid-17th century with funds from local merchants. The church was considered one of the most beautiful not only in Yaroslavl but in the entire country. During the Soviet era, the church was miraculously saved from demolition; at one point, an anti-religious museum operated there. Today, it once again belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church.
