Vladimir Region in 3 Russian words
This region was the heart of Ancient Russia and, today, it’s famous for its unique monuments of medieval architecture. Here are three of its main symbols.
1. ЗОЛОТЫЕ ВОРОТА ВЛАДИМИРА (The Golden Gate of Vladimir)
Built in 1164, the gate served as the main ceremonial entrance to the city of Vladimir and was part of a defensive system that has not survived to this day. The oak doors were covered in gilded copper and glittered dazzlingly in the sun – hence the name.
2. ЦЕРКОВЬ ПОКРОВА НА НЕРЛИ (The Church of the Intercession on the Nerl)
This white-stone church, located 10 km from Vladimir, was built in the 12th century to commemorate Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky's victory over the Bulgars. Before construction began, an artificial mound, faced with stone slabs, was erected to prevent the church, located near the river, from being flooded during high water. By the 18th century, the church had fallen into such disrepair that it was slated for demolition. However, due to a lack of funds, the work never began.
3. ПЕТР И ФЕВРОНИЯ МУРОМСКИЕ (Peter & Fevronia of Murom)
The family life of Prince Peter of Murom and his wife Fevronia is considered a role model in Russia. They lived their entire lives as one soul, died on the same day and were canonized after their deaths. July 8 is celebrated as ‘Family, Love and Fidelity Day’, which naturally coincides with the commemoration of these saints.
