Kursk Region in 3 Russian words

This is one of Russia’s oldest regions, a land of nightingales and apple orchards, rich in architectural landmarks and mineral resources. Here are three of its main symbols.

1. КУРСКИЙ СОЛОВЕЙ (The Kursk Nightingale)

This is the Kursk Region’s most important living symbol. The singing of local nightingales is said to be louder, more melodious and more varied than that of their counterparts elsewhere. These talented singers have long been referred to as ‘Kursk nightingales’. The region is home to a museum dedicated to the bird and a monument has been erected in its honor; a train running to Moscow also bears its name.

2. КУРСКАЯ БИТВА (The Battle of Kursk)

This battle made the word ‘Kursk’ known to the entire world. The Red Army’s victory at the Kursk Salient in Summer 1943 finally cemented the decisive turning point in World War II, which had begun earlier at Stalingrad. To mark the 80th anniversary of this triumph, a magnificent memorial complex was opened there in 2023.

3. КУРСКАЯ МАГНИТНАЯ АНОМАЛИЯ (The Kursk Magnetic Anomaly)

There, a compass needle literally goes haywire! Rich in iron ore, the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly is the largest of its kind in the world. Its surface area exceeds that of Serbia and Ireland combined. In its quarries, gigantic machines look like mere toys!
