A Russian pie with a complex filling, known all over the world.

The ‘kulebyaka’ (French, English ‘coulibiac’, German ‘Kulebjaka’) is a traditional Russian pie with a complex filling of fish, meat, cabbage or rice. Vladimir Dahl derived the word from the verb ‘kulebyachit’ – "to roll with hands, to knead, to mold." In the 19th century, French chefs working in Russia brought the recipe to their homeland and, from there, it spread to the English language. At the same time, linguists believe that the word entered German directly from Russian.
