Raspberry costs 642 rubles.

3. Ананас стоит 950 рублей.

What’s the difference? Why are different endings used (‘рубль’, ‘рубля’, ‘рублей’)?

The ending of the word ‘рубль’ changes according to the final digit of the number. This principle was explained in Unit 12:

• 1 рубль 
  21, 41, 101 рубль
• 2, 3, 4 рубля
  22, 43, 844 рубля
• 5, 6, 7 … рублей 
  35, 46, 99, 280 рублей

When saying ‘kilograms’, the same principle is followed:

• 1 килограмм 
  21, 51, 101 килограмм
• 2, 3, 4 килограмма
  22, 53, 764 килограмма
• 5, 6, 7 … килограммов 
  35, 47, 99, 580 килограммов

1. 21 килограмм
21 kilograms

2. 102 килограмма
102 kilograms

3. 78 килограммов
78 kilograms
