We already learnt usage of Prepositional case after the ‘в’ and ‘на’ prepositions to indicate the location (review Unit 4 and Unit 8). The Prepositional case is also used after the ‘о’ preposition, which is equivalent to English ‘about’. 

1. Я читаю книгу о музыке.
I’m reading a book about music.

2. А: О ком вы говорите?
В: Мы говорим о Марии.

A: Who are you talking about?
B: We’re talking about Maria.

3. А: О чём этот фильм?
В: О Москве.

A: What’s this movie about?
B: It’s about Moscow.

4. А: О чём ты думаешь?
В: Об отпуске.

A: What are you thinking about?
B: About vacation.

NOTE!

The ‘о’ preposition becomes ‘об’ before the noun starting with vowel (except е, ё, ю, я):

об отпуске (about vacation)

об учителе (about the teacher)

об Анне (about Anna)

Below is a list of verbs that are followed by the “о + Prepositional case” construction. The number indicates if it is the first- or second-conjugation verb.

• говорить (2) – to talk, to say, to speak
• думать (1) – to think
• читать (1) – to read
• писать (1) – to write
• помнить (2) – to remember
• забывать (1) – to forget
• разговаривать (1) – to talk, to chat, to converse
• рассказывать (1) – to tell, to explain, to talk
• мечтать (1) – to dream
