When talking about profession with the verbs ‘быть’, ‘работать’ and ‘стать’, the Instrumental case should be used (see Unit 10). Below is a table explaining what endings it has:

Instrumental case

Кем?

Masculine

Feminine

Plural

-ом/-ем *

-ой/ей

-ами/ями

врач →  врачом

писатель →  писателем

актриса → актрисой

певица → певицей

актрисы → актрисами

писатели → писателями

* The table presents two variants of endings in each case. The first ones (-ом, -ой, -ами) are used more frequently. At this stage, we will only focus on them. So, in the following exercises and tasks, we will only practice these three endings.

NOTE!

Remember the words with special forms of the Instrumental case:

  • дети - детьми
  • друзья - друзьями
