Let’s learn some new verbs:

заниматься to do, to study
интересоваться to be interested in
увлекаться to be keen on, to be fond of

Listen to the audio & repeat the examples:

1. Я занимаюсь спортом каждый день.
I do sports everyday.

2. Мария интересуется искусством.
Maria is interested in art.

3. Они увлекаются музыкой и танцами.
They are keen on music and dancing.

Verbs ‘заниматься’, ‘увлекаться’ and ‘интересоваться’ have ‘-ся’ at the end and are called ‘reflexive verbs’. We have already learnt the reflexive verb ‘учиться’ in Unit 9. Below is the conjugation of the new verbs:

	заниматься	увлекаться	интересоваться*
я	занимаюсь	увлекаюсь	я интересуюсь
ты	занимаешься	увлекаешься	интересуешься
он, она	занимается	увлекается	интересуется
мы	занимаемся	увлекаемся	интересуемся

они	занимаются	увлекаются	интересуются

* When you make present tense forms of the verbs ‘интересоваться’, you need to change the suffixe ‘-ова-’ to ‘-у-’ (see Unit 14).

Note that these verbs are used with the Instrumental case.

Боря очень талантливый! Он занимается боксом, увлекается физикой и интересуется бизнесом!
Borya is very talented! He does boxing, is fond of physics and is interested in business!

The verb ‘заниматься’ has multiple meanings, depending on the context. It’s equivalent to expressions like ‘to do’, ‘to study’, ‘to be engaged in’, or’ to be busy/occupied with’ in English. Here are some examples:
