1. ‘ИДТИ/ЕХАТЬ’ VS ‘ХОДИТЬ/‘ЕЗДИТЬ’

Let’s review the difference between verbs of motion ‘идти/ходить’ (to go on foot), ‘ехать/‘ездить’ (to go by transport). For each way of moving (on foot, by transport), there are two verbs:

  • unidirectional verbs (идти, ехать) → describe a movement in one direction, one trip.
  • multidirectional verbs (ходить, ездить) → describe a movement in different directions, repeated or habitual.

The system of these verbs can be presented as a table:

unidirectional

multidirectional

go by foot

идти

ходить

go by transport

ехать

ездить

Let's look at the differences in more detail with examples:

ИДТИ, ЕХАТЬ  ⇒

ХОДИТЬ, ЕЗДИТЬ   ⇄

ONE WAY MOTION

Я иду в магазин.
I’m going to the store.

Я еду на работу.
I’m going to work.

MOVEMENT IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS OR WITHOUT ANY DEFINED DIRECTION

Мы весь день ходили по городу.
We walked around the city all day.

Мы весь день ездили по магазинам.
We spent the whole day driving to stores.

MOTION HAPPENING IN REAL TIME

А: Ты где сейчас? В: Я иду в магазин.
A: Where are you now? B: I’m going to the store.

Я сейчас еду на работу.
I’m going to work right now.

REGULAR OR REOCCURRING TRIPS

Обычно я хожу в этот магазин.
I usually go to this store.

Я каждый день езжу на работу.
I travel to work every day.

PLANS FOR FUTURE

Завтра я иду в театр.
Tomorrow, I’m going to the theater.

В мае я еду в Санкт-Петербург.
In May, I’m going to St. Petersburg.

COMPLETED TRIPS (THERE AND BACK) IN THE PAST

Вчера я ходил в театр.
Yesterday, I went to the theater.

В мае я ездил в Санкт-Петербург.
In May, I went to St. Petersburg.

THE IDEA OF MOVEMENT IN GENERAL

Дедушка медленно ходит.
Grandfather walks slowly.

Эта машина быстро ездит.
This car drives fast.

2. ‘ИДТИ/ХОДИТЬ’ VS ‘ЕХАТЬ/‘ЕЗДИТЬ’

The verbs ‘идти/ходить’ mean ‘to go on foot’, and ‘ехать/ездить’ mean ‘to go by transport’.

Обычно я хожу на работу пешком.
I usually go to work on foot.

Я езжу на работу на метро.
I travel to work by metro.

But, in everyday speech, ‘идти/ходить’ can refer to going somewhere in general, without emphasizing the means of transport. For example:

Вчера я ходил в театр.
Yesterday, I went to the theater.

(It doesn’t matter whether you walked, took a taxi or used another form of transport. The focus is on the act of going to the theater).

At the same time, ‘ехать/ездить’ is commonly used when talking about journeys and traveling. Because a long trip usually implies going by transport. For example:

В июле мы ездили на море.
In July, we went to the sea.
